Google News is an automatic news bulletin service offered by Google which came out in 2006 and was derived from the concept of the StoryRank conceived of a by a premier researcher in Google. It is available in almost twelve languages covering about twenty regions worldwide. Some of these languages include English, French, Spanish, German, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese, Swedish, Japanese etc. Of these Chinese is available in both simplified and traditional characters. The English language news articles cover a total of over four thousand sites, while the numbers are necessarily lesser for the other languages. A few of these websites can be accessed on the basis of subscription and a comprehensive index of those websites is available in the Google News content of articles.
To avoid controversy and speculation regarding the partiality of the news articles present in Google News, Google has ensured the non-inclusion of human editors, the service being designated as totally automated. But, still some of the contents included within its purview which are regulated by human editors have often been criticized and this has led to Google banning the inclusion of such sites. Some of those controversial sources may be referred here like National Vanguard and Indymedia whose articles were accused of being racist and biased. Even though Google denies using human support, at times human editors do provide data to its articles, however the fact that whether they will be added to the final compilation is left for Google News itself to decide. Upon subscribing to Google News Alerts, it is also possible for one to receive email alerts whenever the required articles are posted in Google News bulletin. Most of the major newspapers functioning in the United States are a key source of input for the articles available in Google News. These include, Reuters, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Forbes, Chicago tribune, Voice of America, USA today, ABC News, CNN and many others.
